Aino Korrensalo (aino.korrensalo@uef.fi)

I am a plant ecologist focusing on how vegetation impacts the production, uptake and release of greenhouse gases and biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in boreal peatlands. I would like to understand which properties of peatland plants, plant communities and ecosystems make up peatland carbon cycle and influence the response of peatlands to changing environment. I find it very rewarding when I’m able to build links between these different spatial scales. Currently, I am working with my Academy of Finland -funded post doc project where I study how BVOCs are produced and taken up in the peat and moss layer of peatlands and how their emission into the atmosphere impact climate through aerosol formation.

Aku Seppänen (aku.seppanen@uef.fi)

Professor Aku Seppänen leads a research team, which develops and applies computational and statistical methods for solving inverse problems arising from (physical) science and engineering. The main applications are: 1) environmental monitoring and modeling (especially measuring atmospheric aerosols and remote sensing of forests), and 2) tomographic imaging (especially electrical impedance tomography, industrial process tomography, non-destructive material testing and structural health monitoring; special emphasis is on concrete and other cement-based materials and structures).

Anna Lähde (anna.lahde@uef.fi)

I am professor in aerosol technology and the leader of the Sustainable Materials Group at Fine Particle and Aerosol Technology Laboratory. I have also been holding the Academy of Finland Research Fellow position between 2017 and 2022.  My research is focused on the development of sustainable materials for clean air and water applications. The studies include formation, preparation and characterization of the sustainable nano- and micron-sized materials using sustainable precursors. The research also include the analysis and toxicological effects of these materials and airborne particles.

The main synthesis methods applied in the studies include aerosol processes such as spray pyrolysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor synthesis and high temperature induction annealing up to 2600 ºC. In my recent studies, I have focused on the synthesis of novel materials including carbon structures and graphene, superparamagnetic particles (e.g. iron and iron oxides) and catalytic materials (Au, Co) using aerosol processes and induction annealing.

I received my PhD in Tampere University of Technology (TUT, Department of Physics) 2004. After that I continued working as a postdoc and group leader at TUT. On January 2012 I moved to University of Eastern Finland (UEF) to lead the Aerosol Physics Laboratory. I have a strong background in measurement method development and applications related to atmospheric aerosols. My major research questions are related to the atmospheric aerosols: how they form, what are their properties and what is the role they play in the Earth’s climate through their interactions with water vapour. To study these questions in a comprehensive way I have established a wide international collaborative networks and consistently developed our own research infrastructure at UEF.
Major part of my research is funded by EU Framework program (e.g. project FORCeS, EUROCHAMP2020, ERC Starting Grant project QAPPA) and Academy of Finland.

Nabin Subedi (nabin.subedi@uef.fi)

My current research activity is focused on the development of catalytic metal-organic frameworks for environmental and energy related applications. The produced catalysts are primarily used in carbon capture and conversion into hydrocarbon fuels and other chemicals as well as for decontamination of wastewater. A variety of materials synthesis methods including aerosol processing and solvothermal techniques are utilized. Various sophisticated materials characterization techniques are employed to study the materials property at macro- and micro-scale.

My long-term goal is to contribute to the continuous development of sustainable solutions to address current and emerging environmental challenges.

Olli Sippula (olli.sippula@uef.fi)

My research focuses on aerosol emissions from combustion and industrial processes, their environmental effects and emission control techniques. The research topics cover the effects of combustion technologies and fuels on emission chemical and physical properties, and emission transformation and environmental impacts in the atmosphere. The development of novel exhaust gas after-treatment technologies and circular economy aspects of combustion processes are as well part of the research activities. My research group collaborates extensively with industry and with national and international research groups.
