I’m working in the Center of Law and Welfare and in research group Neuroethics and Law in UEF Neuroscience Community. I’m leading research project Shadows in paradise? The rights of people living with dementia in a welfare state (VAPA; 2022-2025) funded by Kone Foundation. I’m also leader of one work package (WP4) in research project Safeguarding welfare in times of pandemics: towards collaborative governance of syndemics (WELGO; 2021 – 2024), funded by Strategic Research Council. I’m also leading research project Access to justice for marginalized groups of older people in ageing society (AMIS; 2023-2027) and project Realization of rights of people with epilepsy in welfare state (VAHVA; 2023-).

Mervi Issakainen (mervi.issakainen@uef.fi)

I work as a senior researcher in social psychology, with a particular interest in health and well-being issues. I have explored young people’s distress in relation to cultural conceptions of depression, and the experiences, life situations and rights of people with mild cognitive impairment or early onset dementia in working age. I am currently involved in research projects on the well-being and rights of older people, people living with dementia and people living with epilepsy.

PhD student in Doctoral Program in Molecular Medicine (DPMM) in Reetta Kälviäinen’s Clinical Epileptology research group. Supervisors are Jussi Paananen and Reetta Kälviäinen.

Research in epilepsy genetics: clinical exome sequencing data analysis and management, analysis pipeline development and REDCap management (phenotype data collection).

Reetta Kälviäinen (reetta.kalviainen@uef.fi)

Reetta Kälviäinen is the Full Professor and Chair of Neurology in the University of Eastern Finland and the Director of the Kuopio Epilepsy Center in the Kuopio University Hospital. Her special research interest is clinical epileptology including identifying biomarkers of seizure activity, epileptogenesis, progression, and drug-resistancy in cohorts of newly diagnosed and drug-resistant chronic patients. These aspects of scientific projects are combined with therapeutic neuropharmacological interventions. She serves in the steering group of the European Reference Network for rare and complex epilepsies EpiCARE (of which Kuopio Epilepsy Center is a member) and co-chairs the Epilepsy Scientific Panel of the European Academy of Neurology. She is the chair of the steering group for the Establishment Phase of Neurocenter Finland.
