BlackGreen RDI-programme generates new knowledge and process existing information about biochar for the use of
national bioeconomy sector. North-Karelia is on the way to become a very remarkable hub of modern reactive carbon
production. Biochar is a modern reactive carbon having instantly high potential in energy production and metal industry
as a substitute for fossil coal. More processed biochar is a high-value product with numerous uses like filtering,
purification, composting, soil improvement, carbon dioxide storing, biogas production, medicines and animal feeds, not
forgetting barbequing and energy production. BlackGreen programme produces knowledge about products and
production, sustainability, markets as well as about logistics and availability of raw materials. In addition, special
emphasis is directed to dissemination and communication. BlackGreen -programme will be implemented as a joint
effort of Luke, UEF, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Business Joensuu.
