The main goal of the International Retailing project is to build a new complete major subject in international retail for completing the bachelor’s degree at the Business School of the University of Eastern Finland and to provide study modules in retail based on continuous learning for students who are already engaged in business life.

The primary purpose of the project is to plan and implement a major subject in international retail as a study module and integrate it with other studies aimed to complete a bachelor’s degree in business economics, including mandatory general studies, methodology studies, language studies and a thesis. During the project, central courses of the major subject and its compatibility with other studies in the bachelor’s degree programme in business economics will be tested. A path leading to complementary studies in retail will be built alongside the new major subject for students who are already in business life. It will be included in the course range of the Open University at the University of Eastern Finland. This will increase the engagement of working students in retail education in the regions of Northern Savonia and North Karelia and support lifelong learning. All project activities related to education and business cooperation will be built together with representatives of businesses. This helps to link together education and business life. In this respect, the project also continues the operating models developed for cooperation with business life in the I-Factor and GlobalAccess projects, in practice and at the level of individual study modules and whole university degrees. Cooperation with businesses will start from the beginning of the studies, and will be supported by means of flexible teaching arrangements and smooth study processes.

The project’s target group includes all students in the bachelor’s degree programme in business economics who are interested in retail studies (including major and minor students and international exchange students) and representatives of businesses who are engaged in business cooperation with the university and feel that they need more education in the field of retail. The input to launch the project came from businesses, whose representatives have repeatedly identified a lack of competence in international retail. Representatives of businesses have expressed their commitment to the project’s activities both in Northern Savonia and North Karelia. The project has been prepared with the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of both regions. Additional funding has been sought by contacting the towns of Kuopio, Joensuu, Iisalmi and Varkaus and the chambers of commerce operating in the regions. The aforementioned towns, chambers of commerce and central business representatives from Northern Savonia and North Karelia, as well as members of the advisory board of the I-Factor project (S21488), have given their support for the project. All these business representatives are significant decision-makers in the regions of Northern Savonia and North Karelia. In addition, the towns are committed to providing the project with additional funding.

As a result of the project, permanent university-level education in retail will be provided in Finland. The project therefore adds a subject in international retail, considered to be necessary by business representatives, to the study range of the University of Eastern Finland. No other Finnish university provides a major subject in international retail under a bachelor’s degree programme in business economics. This project therefore provides a unique and innovative study module, which characterizes education in business economics in the whole region (Northern Savonia and North Karelia) and builds new competence networks in the area. The project strengthens long-term and extensive interaction between business life and education, as it increases the working life skills and employment situation of Finnish and international students and supports close cooperation between the university and businesses. Students who are already in business life can increase their professional skills and improve their competence, taking the perspective of lifelong learning into account, and improving the quality of work in the field of retail. By educating new professionals in the field of retail, the project strengthens the expertise and business operations of companies in Northern Savonia and North Karelia.

According to the strategy of the University of Eastern Finland, the project contributes to building a responsible and sustainable future, providing multidisciplinary education under a major subject in international retail, which meets the requirements of modern society.
