The School of Pharmacy at the University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) carry out a research project on the media visibility of medicines. The study examines content, patient stories and other narratives published in journalistic media, on the internet and in social media, as well as who the media content is aimed at in the different channels. In addition, communication to physicians before the marketing authorisation and reimbursement decision for new medicines will be explored, and health journalists and representatives of patient organisations will be interviewed.
In addition to providing information, the media play an important role in influencing health policy-making, shaping public opinion and influencing the demand for and supply of medical treatments, for example. Media visibility also provides a means of influencing perceptions and opinions about medicines and the benefits of medical treatment.
