Radiation Research Group (RARE)
Research group
The group investigates the effects of non-ionizing radiation, ionizing radiation and chemicals from the point of view of both environmental health and ecological risks.
We use different approaches from exposure assessment and epidemiology to cellular and molecular biology to study the risks of radiation and chemicals to humans and the environment. Our research fields are non-ionizing and ionizing radiation as well as chemicals, and our common interests include genomic instability, joint effects of multiple environmental agents, and risk assessment. State-of-the-art facilities for cell culture, and cell and molecular biology are available as well as access to the animal facilities of the UEF. We have a collaborative Radiation Biology Unit at the Cancer Center of the Kuopio University Hospital (KUH), involving a cell biology laboratory next to a linear accelerator. The collaboration with KUH also offers a possibility to obtain samples from radiotherapy or diagnostic radiology patients.
