Jarkko Rautio (jarkko.rautio@uef.fi)

My research is focused on the chemistry-based methods, especially prodrugs, in drug delivery and targeting. Much of the research is currently focusing on exploiting the body’s natural mechanisms for transporting nutrients, the LAT1 and GLUT1 proteins, for targeted drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and cancer cells that express these transporters.

Kajar Köster (kajar.koster@uef.fi)

Research interests: Disturbances (fire, wind, reindeer grazing, insects, etc.) and biogeochemistry, carbon dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions, pyrogenic matter formation and post-fire transport (by water), post-disturbance changes in biogeochemical processes, etc.

My research deals with questions how the northern ecosystems respond to climate change, the changes in land-use, and the changes in disturbance dynamics. My current research focusses on how northern ecosystems respond to changes in fire dynamics and other disturbances, and what are the consequences on the formation of greenhouse gas, volatile organic compound, pyrogenic carbon, and soot emissions. The research uses a wide scope of measurements with extensive field-based measurements including experimental and natural fires and detailed process-level studies on the effects of fires on the formation of particles using the existing laboratories in UEF. The work will link disturbance related studies to plant ecology, biogeochemistry and atmospheric sciences, and will improve predictions of ecosystem responses to a changing climate, and helps to understand possible tipping points in the environment (e.g. transitions of ecosystems from carbon sinks to carbon sources).

Kari Sormunen (kari.sormunen@uef.fi)

I am in charge of primary teacher education, where I teach the pedagogy of science in multidisciplinary studies, and I supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses. I am also the responsible person in the pedagogical studies of a subject teacher; there I teach the pedagogy of science mainly to physics, chemistry, and mathematics teacher students. I have participated in several European teacher education projects and spent autumn 2016 as a visiting Fulbright scholar at Stanford University, CA. My research interests are in inclusive science education and multidisciplinary STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) education. I also follow the NoS (Nature of Science) research.

Liudmila Saveleva (liudmila.saveleva@uef.fi)

The focus of my PhD project is to study the effects of environmental pollutants on brain health and the correlation between pollutant exposure and neurodegeneration.

Technical expertise includes in vitro and in vivo human and murine models, animal surgeries, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology methods.
