Anwarul Islam Chowdhury

My doctoral research focuses on detecting biodiversity indicators using remote sensing and deep learning. I am developing a novel approach to map large aspens, deadwood, and community diversity in Finland. I hold two master’s degrees: one in European Forestry from the University of Eastern Finland and another in Spatial and Ecological Modelling from the University of Lleida, Spain, through the Erasmus Mundus scholarship program. During my master’s studies, I became fascinated by the applications of remote sensing in forest ecosystems, which led me to choose it for my master’s thesis (“Predicting spatial patterns of ecosystem services in boreal drained peatland forests using uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) data” with Luke under AlphaWetlands project) and now for my doctoral research.

In addition to remote sensing, I also have extensive research experience in carbon accounting, gap dynamics, urban forestry, bio-economy, and forest ecology, which is reflected in articles published in esteemed journals such as Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of Cleaner Production, and European Journal of Forest Research etc.
