Diseases undoubtedly impair people’s quality of life and functional capacity. This has been confirmed in many studies over the past decades. Mainly, the studies have focused on specific patient groups, and systematic comparisons between groups are rare. In the Quality of Life and Diseases (ELSA) study by the Institute of Public Health and Clinical Nutrition at the University of Eastern Finland, the connections between quality of life and functional capacity in various chronic diseases are examined. The study data is collected through an annual (2024-2026) electronic survey, which, in addition to diseases, including multimorbidity, and general background information, maps out quality of life and functional capacity, experiences related to life situations, as well as optimism and pessimism. The ELSA study is conducted in collaboration with Finnish patient organizations.
