Institute of Clinical Medicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences

CorFlux project is funded by Business Finland and University of Eastern Finland and aims to be standard model in clinical assessment of Aortic Aneurysm (AA) rupture risk, create strong technological product development and develop a business model suitable for investors. Commercialisation goal is to create new business in Finland, do collaboration with other Finnish service and technology companies, enable international research and capital funding and create new health technology jobs in Finland.

The diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of aortic aneurysms cause significant costs for worldwide healthcare systems and economies. CorFlux analysis is a completely new approach for assessing the criticality of aortic aneurysms. The analysis will enable healthcare professionals to make decisions related to the treatment of aortic aneurysm patients much more accurately than the current practice.

At the moment AA is classified as dilated when the aortic diameter is >40mm. Patients with dilated aorta are usually scheduled for repeated follow up for the rest of their lives even though ~80% of the AA patients situation do not chance during the follow up. CorFlux analyse is based on clinical data and MRi and CT scans. The aortic digital twin simulation calculates the stresses in the aortic wall and estimates the Aortic rupture risk index. The result can be used as a clinical decision making tool to exclude the mild risk patients from the follow up and send only average risk patients to the follow up and high risk patients to the surgery or intensive follow up. This decreases the follow up costs significantly.
