Research group on Legal Interpretation and the Philosophy of Law
The role of interpretation and meaning in the doctrinal (legal) method.
The research group focuses on understanding the anatomy of legal interpretation, and on systematising interpretive rules and canons. Especially the following questions are at the heart of our study: What are the linkages between linguistic and legal theories of meaning?; What is the role of interpretation in the doctrinal methodology?; What (legal) interpretive methods exist?; Is it feasible to systematise legal interpretive methods under von Savignys theory of interpretive canons?; Do interpretive canons in different fields of law share similar characteristics?; What is the role of interpretive canons for adapting law to changing societal circumstances?
