Optimal timing is the key factor in successful animal breeding. Fluent and ethical breeding tools are important not only for agricultural production, but also for pet breeders, fur industry and in wildlife conservation. In breeding and in research, several blood samples are collected, or other invasive and unpleasant methods are used to explore the stage of the oestrus cycle in the domestic dog (Canis familiaris).

The main aim of the project is to develop a fast and convenient assay to detect optimal breeding time non-invasively in the bitch. The product development is based on the understanding metabolism of progesterone during oestrus cycle and on the measurements of the key urinary progesterone hormone metabolites.
