Social work practices should be based on the systematic application of research as part of everyday social work. Nevertheless, current research—aka evidence-based practice—is at a relatively different stage from health care and social care.

The NÄPSÄ research project strengthens evidence-based practice in social work. Our theoretical framework is based on the evidence-based practice model. According to the model, social workers’ assessments and decision-making should be based on the client’s perceptions and values, the practitioner’s expertise, the context, and the use of the best available and current research evidence.

NÄPSÄ research project executes three work packages:

  1. We investigate the perceptions and knowledge base of evidence-based practice by performing scoping reviews and interviewing social work managers.
  2. We evaluate the learning and implementation of evidence-based practice in social work students.
  3. We will carry out and evaluate an education pilot for social workers.

Evidence-based practice is ongoing reflective work in different stages of social work’s client work. Acknowledging the individuality and participation of each client is fundamental. Social work’s evidence-based practice should be developed in client work as well as in service planning. At its best, evidence-based practice promotes the effectiveness of social work and ethical client work.
