When stakes are high, there is little margin for error. In mission-critical performance, synergies are hypothesized to be the driving force that intertwines multiple high-level and low-level cognitive, perceptual, and motor components. In surgery, cognition, perception, and precise motor actions must delicately coordinate mental schemata, dexterity, attention, communication, and self-regulation. How precisely these synergies emerge is currently unknown. By departing from conventional approaches to performance understanding, SYMPEX aims to discover synergies as multimodal coordinative structures and their association with expertise. In particular, SYMPEX investigates synergies emerging in longitudinal, translational, and anomalous expertise through three WPs. Jointly, the accounts of synergy emergence, fine-detailed multimodal mechanisms of skills, and novel nonlinear effective models will open new avenues in ubiquitous technologies
