The community of microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, which colonizes human tissues is called the microbiome. The role of microbiome in health and contribution of its imbalance, called the dysbiosis, in several chronic diseases is intensively investigated. Especially the gut microbiome is under vivid research whereas the other microbiomes is not studied that much. In this research project we will clarify the role of oral microbiome in prevalent and incident public health problems. In addition, we will investigate how genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors affect the oral microbiome and how the microbiome is reflected in circulating metabolites.
The microbiome is not unchangeable, whereas its composition may be affected. When we will know what kind of microbiome benefits oral and – thereby – systemic health, we may intensify and personalize oral health care to prevent dysbiosis. This will produce both savings and well-being.
