The group is a joint research group of the School of Computing and the Department of Physics and Mathematics. It belongs to the Institute of Photonics. From its origin at the middle of 1980’s the group has focused on the spectrum based color research and novel methods for spectral data analysis and measurement.

Our research group focuses on spectral colour research and development of new methods for measuring and analysing of spectral data. Our research group was formed in mid-1980’s and is a joint research group of the School of Computing and the Department of Physics and Mathematics. Our group is also a part of the Center for Photonics Sciences (formerly the Institute of Photonics). Our research group has 15 members. Our laboratories are well-equipped for spectral colour research including several spectral cameras and spectrometers.

We are active in international collaboration. The collaboration has recently been concentrated on Japan, where we collaborate with Universities of Chiba, Toyohashi, and Utsunomiya. Our research group is a consortium member of the Erasmus Mundus Computational Color and Spectral Imaging (COSI) master programme.

Our research has been funded by the University of Eastern Finland, Academy of Finland, Business Finland (formerly Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation), and industrial partners. In recent years, the infrastructure and industrial cooperation models have been built with European Union Structural Funding.

Our research group also has separate, more detailed home pages at https://sites.uef.fi/spectral. In these separate pages, we share open access datasets our research group has measured and introduce some of our laboratory infrastructure.
