The ECORENOUNCERS project examines ecological renunciation as action and renouncers as social and moral agents. Funded by Kone Foundation (2025-2027), the project combines research and art.
The concept of renunciation offers a critical alternative to the ideal of growth that has long guided Western societies. Exceeding planetary boundaries has awakened individuals and communities: we must give up things that have been taken for granted in the past.
The working group approaches ecological renunciation through social ethics research (DTh Taina Kalliokoski), non-fiction (MA Anna-Kaisa Linna-Aho) and photography (MTh, MSocSc Heikki Nenonen).
The project produces researched knowledge and art on how an individual is motivated to choose a sustainable, renouncing way of life and how change is reflected in a person’s life. We ask what kind of arguments do renouncers give for their ecological renouncing, what kind of structures or factors support or prevent voluntary renouncing, and what kind of functional, social and emotional elements are involved in renunciation, and how to describe and capture them in pictures.
