The purpose of the network is to promote environmental collaboration by co-creating the Environmental Collaboration and Conflict Resolution (ECCR) course series. The first course, held in 2016, addressed various ways to create collaboration between actors involved in the management and governance of forest resources. The ECCR courses focus on the conceptualization of environmental conflicts, conflict resolution and mediation. The course participants learn theory and practical skills on collaborative approaches. The courses include the examination of theoretical frameworks, case studies, and exercises on collaboration, mediation and listening skills.
The network promotes partnerships between higher education institutions in the field of environmental collaboration, conflict resolution and collaborative governance. In 2021-2024, the ECCR courses and teaching network is supported by the EDUCase Platform, an initiative of the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland. The EDUCase Platform is focused on higher education, sustainable development and innovations.
Environmental Collaboration and Conflict Resolution Course Series and Teaching Network contribute to the implementation of Finland’s National Action Plan 2021–2024 on Youth, Peace and Security as well as Finland’s Africa Strategy, including the Africa Action Plan for the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
In 2022, ECCR courses were held in Finland and Tanzania. The next courses will be organized in Uganda (2023) and in Joensuu, Finland (2024).
