National Development of Special Education Training (Erkkaa1) is a national development project for special education training, carried out during the years 2025–2027. The project involves all eight Finnish universities that offer studies in special education: University of Eastern Finland (UEF), University of Lapland (LY), University of Oulu (OY), Åbo Akademi University (ÅBO), University of Jyväskylä (JYU), Tampere University (TAU), University of Turku (TY), and University of Helsinki (HY). The project is led by Professor Erkko Sointu from the University of Eastern Finland, with University Lecturer Katariina Waltzer serving as deputy director. The project coordinator is University Teacher Helena Laurinkari.

The main goal of the project is to promote national collaboration in special education by developing and piloting a joint curriculum for basic studies in special education and by producing shared learning content. Additionally, the project aims to support cross-institutional studies in subject-specific and advanced studies. The project also focuses on sharing and utilizing good and diverse practices in digital pedagogy.
