Grand Duchy of Finland as Political Space: A conceptual history is an Academy of Finland funded four-year research project. The project studies the political meanings of the notion of Grand Duchy of Finland as a part of Swedish and Russian empires. By examining the conceptual history of grand duchy in the context of evolution of European political language, it seeks to uncover not only the peculiarities of Finnish political culture but to contribute to the larger international discussion on the genealogy of the modern state. Using topic modelling and other language processing techniques, we will be able to identify when and to what degree the attributes of modern state, nation, and polity were attached to the concept of grand duchy.
