The Environmental Collaboration and Conflict Resolution (ECCR) is a global network and course series dedicated to fostering collaborative approaches to environmental governance and conflict resolution. Through teaching, research and international partnerships, the ECCR promotes the co-creation of knowledge and development of skills for addressing complex environmental challenges. The ECCR offers two courses on governance and conflict resolution in relation to natural resource governance.
In-person course
Since its launch in 2016, the ECCR conducted annual courses in collaboration with partner organizations. ECCR courses have been hosted by partner organizations in Finland, Denmark, Mexico, Tanzania, Uganda and Indonesia. Each course is designed around three core themes. 1. Conceptual foundations: participants explore theoretical frameworks related to collaborative governance and conflict resolution, focusing on natural resource management, protection and governance. 2. Case-Based exploration: through field visits and direct engagement with local actors, participants examine real-world case studies to understand the dynamics of environmental collaboration and conflicts. 3. Practical skills: participants are introduced to strategies in facilitating collaborative approaches and conflict resolution strategies. ECCR courses encourage participants to critically explore collaborative approaches and conflict resolution strategies in different socio-cultural and ecological contexts. Participants will also engage with a global network of researchers and practitioners working on environmental collaboration and conflicts.
Online course
The ECCR is launching an online course on collaborative approaches and conflict resolution strategies for sustainability challenges (ECCR-ON) in 2026. This course explores theories, tools and practices that foster collaborative approaches and conflict resolution strategies in the context of sustainability challenges. It offers a foundational understanding of theoretical and methodological approaches to collaboration and conflict resolution. The course provides an overview of key theories in collaborative governance, explains analytical frameworks and offers examples of real cases studies globally. The course is offered in collaboration to UniPID.
In 2024 – 2026 ECCR network activities are funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education through the Team Finland Knowledge (TFK) programme. Previously, from 2021-2024, the ECCR courses and teaching network was supported by the EDUCase Platform, an initiative of the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland. The EDUCase Platform was focused on higher education, sustainable development and innovations.
