Department of Technical Physics, Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology

The Materials Technology Research Group focuses on the characterization of materials and the study of material interactions, the development of AI-assisted monitoring methods, and the research and processing of bio-based materials and circular economy materials. We also develop and apply our expertise to novel material applications and technologies, such as 3D printing and coatings.

Our expertise is utilized, for example, in sustainable industry and in research related to the safety and environmental resistance of materials and products.

The group’s research is multidisciplinary and involves experts from several fields, including the Department of Chemistry and Sustainable Technology, the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and the Department of Physics and Mathematics, as well as from the Faculty of Health Sciences (including e.g., pharmacy and nutrition science). Our research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities are carried out in close collaboration with our extensive network of companies, research institutes, and other educational organizations in the region.

Ongoing projects include:

  • NOMAD (Academy-funded project on the transport and fate of microplastics), 2024-2028
  • 3D4ALL (Ministry of Education and Culture funding for educational development), 2026-2027
  • BioPRO365 (AURA ERDF project by the Regional Council of North Savo to promote the utilization of side-stream-based materials), 2026-2028
