Public service interpreters enable communication between migrants, welfare service professionals and authorities. The project analyses the professionalization process of public service interpreting and the working conditions of interpreters. It also examines interpreters’ professionality in interpreting encounters and in migrant integration processes.

Public service interpreters constitute a diverse group of practitioners in terms of ethnicity, gender, and education, which opens possibilities for exploring axes of inequalities. Yet, this diversity may also offer previously unrecognized resources for migrant work.

The interdisciplinary project combines sociological theories of professionalization, translation and interpreting studies, and migration studies in order to produce and analyze new datasets (a survey, interviews, and ethnographic materials).
