Outi Hakola ([email protected])

Outi Hakola, PhD, works as an associate professor of communication studies at the University of Eastern Finland. She is also a docent in societal media studies at the University of Turku and docent in area and cultural studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research interests focus on media and audiovisual communication/culture, with a particular emphasis on representations of death and dying, deepfakes, and political comedy.

Hakola defended her doctoral thesis in media studies at the University of Turku in 2011. Since completing her dissertation, Hakola has worked on the Human Mortality Project at the University of Helsinki Research Collegium (2011–2013), as a visiting researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, USA (2013–2014), as a university lecturer in area and cultural studies (2014–2017), as an Academy Research Fellow at the University of Helsinki (2017–2022), and most recently as a university lecturer in qualitative methods at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies at the University of Eastern Finland.

Outi Kiljunen ([email protected])

I am a University Lecturer at the Department of Nursing Science. My teaching responsibilities include courses on nursing leadership and client and patient safety management. I supervise master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. My research focuses on the care of older people within long-term care settings.
The Publications section features scholarly works published in affiliation with the University of Eastern Finland. A comprehensive bibliography of my publications can be found in my ORCID profile.

Outi Kurri ([email protected])

I am a curious natural scientist who looks at the world in wonder. With the tools of mathematics and computational physics, I tackle research problems as puzzles to be solved.

Currently I am working on a research project focusing on modelling natural processes that produce CO2 in upland soil and CH4 in peat. As the production rates of gases within soil cannot be directly measured, we need to solve so called inverse problems. To do this, I am using computational and statistical methods combined with dynamical models and real measurement data.

Outi Kähkönen ([email protected])

I work as an Senior Researcher at the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Eastern Finland.

I work as a university researcher at the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Eastern Finland. My research focuses on treatment adherence among people with chronic illnesses, the role of social support, and the development of patient education. In my doctoral dissertation, I examined treatment adherence among patients with coronary artery disease after percutaneous coronary intervention. The study highlighted patients’ individual challenges as well as concrete strategies to support their long-term engagement in care.

Currently, I lead a research project aimed at developing patient education for individuals with atrial fibrillation, in collaboration with both national and international partners. The goal is to strengthen patients’ active role in their care process and to develop approaches that address their individual educational needs.

In addition, I explore occupational well-being in the field of education – particularly the stressors and well-being-promoting factors affecting healthcare educators and students.

The aim of my research is to produce impactful and practice-oriented knowledge that supports both patient well-being and occupational well-being in the higher education context, especially within continuously evolving environments.

Outi Ratamäki ([email protected])

My research focuses on how humans, animals, nature and environment(s) co-produce (un)shared realities and how this production is controlled or steered in societies and communities through institutional, material and socio-cultural arrangements. I am interested in the multidimensional and multilevel nature of politics and policies. I have analysed e.g. on wolf policies, development of modern animal policy and law and sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystem services. I have a strong interest towards interdisciplinary work; my research reaches out from social sciences towards humanities and law. I am highly interested in legal research methodology. I teach about empirical legal research and animal law and policy.

Outi Soininen ([email protected])

My primary responsibilities include the UEF Connect service and customer relationship management development projects.
In UEF Connect, my focus is on the development and maintenance of the service, including interfaces with other services. In customer relationship management, I am responsible for developing the target state and operating model, as well as participating in system development. Additionally, I participate in reporting related to research and external funding, as well as other support functions (such as forms).

Paavo Vartiainen ([email protected])

Paavo has strong experience in conducting measurements and developing data analysis methods for biomechanical motion analysis. Motion capture system, force platforms, instrumented treadmill, wearable IMU sensors and EMG measurement systems are equipment that he is putting into practice.

In addition to the motion laboratory, he is developing software for robot-assisted rehabilitation environment. Also developing laboratory hardware of all four laboratories of the research group with technical experts is his duty.

Paavo is conduction musculoskeletal modelling in OpenSim-platform to analyze knee contact forces and muscle activations. Current research interests include analysis on patient-specific rehabilitation of knee osteoarthritis and analysis of muscle forces at sports movements such as dance and ski-jump takeoff.

His another major research&development area is robotics and VR in neurological rehabilitation.
