Contact persons

This doctoral project explores language contact in the Ob-Yenisei region of Siberia, where Uralic, Turkic, Tungusic, and Yeniseian languages have coexisted and interacted for centuries. Focusing on the easternmost Uralic languages in the wider language area, the project investigates how contact between neighbouring communities has shaped grammatical structures across language-family boundaries.

By comparing documented language varieties and building a grammatical database, the research identifies both stable features of the Uralic language family and structures that are particularly prone to contact-induced change. At the same time, it examines the role of Uralic languages as sources of influence on their neighbours, contributing to a broader understanding of areal processes in northern Eurasia.

The project advances knowledge of linguistic evolution in Siberia while increasing the digital visibility and accessibility of endangered minority languages.
