Teija Makkonen

I am a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in social pedagogy at the University of Eastern Finland. My PhD (2024) examined the agency and professional practices of artists in elder care communities. My expertise includes sociocultural work, social pedagogical approaches, cultural well-being, social inclusion, and issues of inequality among vulnerable groups.

I work in the Strategic Research Council-funded SISU project, studying agency, future visions, and perceptions of sufficiency among people in vulnerable positions, such as adults with intellectual disabilities and older people in rural areas. I also contribute to the DRIVEX project funded by the Kone Foundation, which explores older men’s experiences of giving up driving and supporting related life changes.

I am active in the academic community as a board member of the Finnish Society of Social Pedagogy and deputy board member of the Association for Research on Growth and Aging. I am part of the Gender Studies Network (SUVEF) at UEF and will serve as Associate Editor of Sosiaalipedagogiikka from 2026.
