Prof. Lehto obtained his M.Sc. in 1993, Lic.Phil. in 1996 and Ph.D. in 1999, in Department of Physics, University of Turku, Finland, where he led a research group for the years 2004-2008. He has held the position of full professor in Material Physics at University of Eastern Finland (UEF) since 2008. He has also worked as a senior scientist in the discovery group of Focus Inhalation Ltd in 2002-2003.

His main research interests include physicochemical characterization of pharmaceuticals and especially disordered solid materials, with a special emphasis on mesoporous silicon micro- and nanoparticles. These nanostructured materials are being developed for three specific applications: i) Multifunctional drug delivery systems, ii) Anode materials for Li-ion batteries, and iii) Adsorbents of metal ions especially for dilute aqueous solutions. He is the leader of Pharmaceutical Physics research group in Department of Applied Physics at UEF. He is also leading one of the emerging research fields “Aquatic research in changing world” included in the strategy of the University of Eastern Finland. He has published more than 180 refereed articles, his h-index is 38 and the total number of citations is >5000 (WoS). He is the chairman of the Finnish Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry Association (FinTAC), treasurer of the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis (ICTAC) and he has chaired the ESTAC-11 conference in 2014.
