AI-FormaKE – Developing Formative AI‑Supported Assessment Practices in University Teaching
Project Overview
AI-FormAKe focuses on developing formative, AI-assisted assessment practices at the University of Eastern Finland. The aim is to build a sustainable and pedagogically grounded operating model that supports the responsible and safe use of artificial intelligence as part of assessment in university teaching, while also strengthening teachers’ competence in a rapidly changing educational environment.
The project kick-off events were held on Friday, 20 February 2026 and Wednesday, 25 February 2026. A total of 16 teachers from different faculties participated in the project’s pilot phase.
Objectives
The project has three main objectives:
- To develop a process model for formative assessment at UEF.
- To renew assessment practices by using artificial intelligence in an ethical and pedagogically sustainable way.
- To implement the operating model at UEF by providing training, materials and peer support.
Background and Rationale
International benchmarking and previous research identified five key themes that support teaching staff in the use of artificial intelligence:
- clear guidelines
- safe tools and approved practices
- sufficient training
- opportunities for peer learning
- continuous pedagogical and technical development
In the university context, key questions include the integrity of assessment, the safety of tools, and teachers’ competence and support.
According to UEF’s 2025 survey:
- artificial intelligence is currently used especially for content production,
- its pedagogical use is still more limited,
- ethical concerns and lack of competence make it more difficult to use AI,
- teachers would like training especially in the ethical and pedagogical use of AI,
- developing AI literacy among both students and staff is important.
The aim of the project is therefore not only to develop guidelines, but also to build a functioning community and environment that supports the meaningful use of artificial intelligence.
Pilot Phase and Working Approach
Teachers from several faculties were invited to participate in the pilot phase, and the work began with the kick-off events. During the pilot phase, the project provides:
- continuous technical and pedagogical support,
- the opportunity to book individual support with Project Researcher Niko Loikkanen, especially on technical and pedagogical questions related to AI,
- collection of teacher and student feedback at the end of the pilot,
- further development of the assessment model during the summer based on the feedback received,
- implementation of the model in different ways in the autumn,
- opportunities for pilot teachers to act as sparring partners for other teachers,
- and mapping of new initiatives and possibilities for a follow-up project.
Project Workspace: UEF Moodle
A dedicated UEF Moodle workspace has been created for the project:
Key: AI-FormAKe
The workspace is currently under construction. Participants will receive further information as more content becomes available.
Through UEF Moodle, the project will, for example:
- share project materials and guidelines,
- provide support and up-to-date information,
- enable teachers to share their own materials and ask questions.
