This project develops a new generation of recyclable, water-processable binders for lithium-ion batteries, replacing today’s harmful fluorinated binders and toxic solvents. Using bio-based polymers and environmentally friendly chemistry, the binders enable high battery performance and low-energy recovery of valuable battery materials. The research is carried out at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and LUT University together with research and industry partners. The work includes materials synthesis, electrode fabrication, electrochemical measurements and battery ageing study, as well as life-cycle sustainability assessment to evaluate technical and societal impacts. By improving battery manufacturing and end-of-life recycling, the project supports Finland’s transition toward low-emission, circular battery technologies in line with Europe’s climate-neutrality goals.
