RESEARCH INTERESTS:

PROTEIN STRUCTURE & FUNCTION

  • Allergen proteins, diagnostic and therapeutic antibodies, enzymes (e.g., hydrolyses, polyphenol oxidases), metalloproteins. Protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions, binding thermodynamics and kinetics.

THERMOCHEMICAL WASTE STREAM CONVERSION & VALORIZATION

  • Slow and fast pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and carbonization, catalytic upgrading of bio-oils (hydrodeoxygenation, catalytic pyrolysis). Lignocellulosic side streams, plastic and rubber waste.

MASS SPECTROMETRY & BIOANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

  • High-resolution mass spectrometry, native mass spectrometry, structural proteomics, metabolomics, petroleomics, complex mixture analysis (e.g., bio-oils, waste plastics, dissolved organic matter, natural extracts etc).

KEY TECHNOLOGIES & INFRASTRUCTURES:

  • High-resolution mass spectrometry laboratory (more info available here)
    • Bruker 12-T Solarix FT-ICR instrument (with ParaCell)
    • Bruker timsTOF trapped ion mobility QTOF instrument
    • Thermo Q Exactive Orbitrap UHMR instrument
    • Dionex Ultimate 3000 HPLC and Bruker/Scion GC systems (to use with Bruker instruments)
  • Protein crystallography (Marresearch Mar345 imaging plate, Nonius/Bruker FR591 rotating anode, confocal optics)
  • Thermochemical conversion (lab-scale micropyrolysis reactor, pilot-scale high-pressure HTL/HTC reactor)
  • Protein production and characterization facilities (HPLC, DLS, SDS-PAGE, light microscopy, crystallization robot)
  • Complex organic mixture analytics (CHNOS, pH, TAN titration, KF titration, UV-Vis, FT-IR, 500 MHz NMR)

In the field of structural biology, the group is a core facility and technology service provider in several national and European infrastructure networks, including Biocenter Kuopio, FINStruct, EU-FTICR-MS, and Instruct-ERIC.

For requesting Instruct-ERIC access for native mass spectrometry, please see Instruct Center FI/Joensuu for details. For general enquiries, contact Janne Jänis.
