The project Investigative and enabling art aims at creating connections and new openings between research, art, and societal actors. The project focuses especially on the potential of community art in creating opportunities for participation and empowerment among people in various margins in society. Our research concerns for example the themes of interaction, participation, creativity and artists' roles in the field of community art, and strengthenening the societal value of these aspects. The core group of the project consists of dance pedagogue and community artist Minnamaria Hirvonen, sociologist of art Anna Logrén (PhD), English linguist Heli Paulasto (PhD), and community artist Merja Pennanen.

The activities of the project include presentations and publications, Encounters in Art -seminars, and organizing workshops and bigger and smaller gatherings enabling networking between the different parties of research, art, and public services. The very heart of the project is the Able Art Group concept of community art and dance, led by Minnamaria Hirvonen. Able Art Group is a series of performing groups with varying themes and compositions of participants. The researchers of the project have also participated in the groups as dancers and ethnographers.

For further information on Encounters in Art seminars and the project itself, see our website.
