My research focuses on education policy and governance, particularly anticipatory forms of governance. I am interested in how the economy, consumer cultures, and the textual and calculative practices that materialise through them shape the everyday life of education. Methodologically, my research is grounded in the traditions of ethnography and comparative education policy.

My work focuses particularly on international marketing, communications, and stakeholder partnerships at the university. I serve as the communications contact for the university’s participation in the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) alliance. My responsibilities also include a variety of development tasks and partnerships, such as collaboration between the university and sports teams and Sports Academies, as well as initiatives related to the university’s employer branding. I completed my doctoral degree in UEF Business School in 2025, with a dissertation titled Loyalty in Grocery Retail. In my research, I examined the factors influencing brand and customer loyalty in the retail sector. I combined research methods from marketing, linguistics, and psychology.

My research interests are in motivation, perfectionism, and well-being outcomes. My dissertation focuses on connections and developmental dynamics between secondary students’ perfectionism and well-being (academic and more general), and the role of perceived support. Hopefully the findings of this project will contribute to our understanding of the role that perfectionistic tendencies play in students’ well-being.

I defended my doctoral dissertation in the field of Finnish history at the University of Eastern Finland in September 2025. In my dissertation, I study how Finns operated as part of the Soviet press in Soviet Karelia during the 1920s and 1930s. In addition to press activities, my research also addressed ethnic relations in Soviet Karelia, changes in the language used in propaganda, the relationship between Moscow and Soviet Karelia, and the mechanisms of Stalin’s terror. My doctoral dissertation was completed in close collaboration with the researchers of the Finns in Russia 1917–1964 project at the National Archives of Finland.
From 2024 to 2025, I worked as a ERC research assistant in the international project The Age of Civil Wars in Europe, which investigates the transnational connections of European civil wars. The project is coordinated by University College Dublin and funded by the European Research Council.
Currently, I’m working on my postdoctoral research project titled Punalippu (Red Flag), Glasnost, and the History of the Finns. I study how the history of the Finns in the Soviet Union was remembered and written about in the Finnish-language journal Punalippu, which was published in Petrozavodsk, the capital of Soviet Karelia, during the years of glasnost. The project is funded by the Kone Foundation.

Anna Lähde ([email protected])
I am professor in aerosol technology and the leader of the Sustainable Materials Group at Fine Particle and Aerosol Technology Laboratory. I have also been holding the Academy of Finland Research Fellow position between 2017 and 2022. My research is focused on the development of sustainable materials for clean air and water applications. The studies include formation, preparation and characterization of the sustainable nano- and micron-sized materials using sustainable precursors. The research also include the analysis and toxicological effects of these materials and airborne particles.
The main synthesis methods applied in the studies include aerosol processes such as spray pyrolysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor synthesis and high temperature induction annealing up to 2600 ºC. In my recent studies, I have focused on the synthesis of novel materials including carbon structures and graphene, superparamagnetic particles (e.g. iron and iron oxides) and catalytic materials (Au, Co) using aerosol processes and induction annealing.

Anna Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen ([email protected])
Anna Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen is Professor of Law and Ageing. Her research has focused on Elder Law combining jurisprudence (Civil Law and Social- and Medical Law) with social and medical sciences.
Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen received her PhD (law) from the University of Helsinki in 2003. The title of her thesis is “Legal Rights of People with Dementia”. Her second monograph (2013) deals with the legal possibilities to anticipate aging. In autumn 2017, she published a book “Basics of Elder Law” with Anja Karvonen-Kälkäjä.
Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen is involved in many research projects. She is sub-consortium PI in an international research project focusing on the specific issues concerning people who develop dementia or mild cognitive impairment while still working (MCI@work). She is also sub-consortium PI in national research project scrutinizing home-based palliative care of the elderly (MeRela). At the University of Eastern Finland, Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen leads the Neuro-Ethics and Law research team, which is part of the university’s multidisciplinary Neuroscience research community.
Mäki-Petäjä-Leinonen teaches Elder and Guardianship law and is a teacher in course “Social Law Clinic”. She is docent (adjunct professor) in Family law at the University of Helsinki and docent (adjunct professor) in Elder law at the University of Lapland.
Anna Rawlings ([email protected])
In my research, I examine motivation, learning, and well-being in different learning environments and among learners of different ages. I am particularly interested in how temperament guides these phenomena, processes, and their interconnections. I have started working as a grant researcher at UEF in May 2023.
I am also coordinator of FinEd, or the Finnish Multidisciplinary Doctoral Training Network on Educational Sciences (2022–).
