Timo Lakka is a Professor of Medical Physiology at University of Eastern Finland, a Specialist in Internal Medicine, and an Adjunct Professor of Public Health. His research is focused on the identification of individuals at increased risk of overweight, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and the prevention of these diseases and conditions by increasing physical activity and improving diet since childhood. He is a Principal Investigator in the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) study and a Co-Principal Investigator in the Stop Diabetes (StopDia) study and the Dose Responses to Exercise Training (DR’s EXTRA) study. He has also acted as a senior researcher in many other large-scale lifestyle intervention studies, long-term epidemiological follow-up studies, and wide international genetic-epidemiological studies. He has published over 360 scientific articles in international journals, and these articles have almost 60 000 citations and a h-index of 106 (Google Scholar). He has supervised 24 doctoral theses and is a supervisor of another 13 doctoral students.

I started my studies in the University of Eastern Finland in 2011 after two years in the service for the Finnish Defense Forces. I got my bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in five years in 2016 at the age of 26 years and my thesis earned a grade of approved with distinction (which is awarded only if dissertation falls in the category of top 5% of its field). Since then, I have been a co-head and principal investigator in the STAG, a research team focusing on sleep-related disorders and development of novel methods and computational tools for sleep data analysis. Furthermore, I have established a wide international collaboration network with world’s top-level scientists and research infrastructures as well as companies operating at business sector. My research is mainly funded by the the Academy of Finland (Postdoctoral Researcher), Business Finland (NordicPerMed project NordSleep) and private foundations.
My research is focused on development of novel diagnostic parameters, mathematical solutions, and paradigms for severity estimation of obstructive sleep apnea. Therefore, it is very closely related to medical physics but it has also strong interface with clinical medicine. Thus, my research is a great example of interdisciplinary research in University of Eastern Finland but also of active research collaboration between University of Eastern Finland and Kuopio University Hospital.

Tomi H. Kinnunen is a Professor at the University of Eastern Finland. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Joensuu in 2005. From 2005 to 2007, he was an associate scientist at the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) in Singapore. Since 2007, he has been with UEF. In 2010-2012, he was funded by a post-doctoral grant from Academy of Finland focusing on speaker recognition. He has been a PI or co-PI in three other large Academy of Finland funded projects on speaker recognition and voice anti-spoofing, and a partner in H2020-funded OCTAVE project focusing on voice biometrics for physical and logical access control. He chaired Odyssey 2014 workshop and served as an associate editor in Digital Signal Processing. From 2015 to 2018, he served as an associate editor in IEEE/ACM Trans. on Audio, Speech and Language Processing and from 2016 to 2018 as a Subject Editor in Speech Communication. Between 2015 and 2016 he visited 6 months at National Institute of Informatics (NII), Japan, under a mobility grant from Academy of Finland, with focus on voice conversion and spoofing. Since 2017, he has been Associate Professor at UEF, where he leads Computational Speech Group (https://www.uef.fi/web/speech). He is known as one of the co-founders of ASVspoof challenge (www.asvspoof.org), a non-profit initiate that seeks to evaluate and improve security of voice biometric solutions under spoofing attacks.
Research interests:
– Speaker and language recognition (in wide sense; includes automatic and perceptual methods)
– Spoofing and countermeasures for speaker recognition
– Voice transformation
– Application of my research to other bioacoustic signals

I am researching machine learning based image analysis. My PhD project is about using deep learning methods to analyze dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) images. I seek to discover how these methods could exploit all the information in DXA images to improve osteoporotic fracture risk prediction.
