Jingoo Kang ([email protected])

Dr. Kang’s research focuses on understanding how students’ competence, motivation, and social experiences are translated into confidence, participation, and future educational trajectories. Situated at the intersection of learning sciences, educational psychology, and STEM education, his work examines how classroom learning environments and social interactions shape these developmental processes. A particular focus is on equity in STEM learning, including gender differences in the development of confidence and participation in collaborative learning. He also investigates how educational experiences influence students’ environmental attitudes and climate action. Methodologically, his research combines large-scale educational data with emerging computational approaches, including voice-based classroom interaction analysis, social network analysis, automatic speech recognition, and machine learning. Through this work, he aims to develop a deeper understanding of how cognitive, motivational, and social processes interact in authentic learning environments and how these insights can support more effective and equitable education.

Julia Wurm ([email protected])

Julia is a doctoral researcher at the Karelian Institute at the University of Eastern Finland and is enrolled in the PhD Programme in Border Studies. Before joining the Karelian Institute, she completed a Master of Advanced Study in Transborder Studies at Arizona State University and a Master of Social Sciences in Sociology from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. Her earlier research examined lithium extraction and the “green” transition in the Arizona-Sonora borderlands and was supported by a two year Austrian Fulbright Scholarship and the 2025–26 Wells Fargo Transborder Chicana/o & Latina/o Studies Research Scholarship. Her dissertation examines borders as regulatory institutions that mediate the unequal social and ecological consequences of contemporary interlocking crises. Julia’s research investigates how borders shape the unequal distribution of socio-ecological costs and benefits, how these transformations are experienced and negotiated in everyday life, and how cross-border resilience, cooperation, and solidarity may contribute to more just transition pathways. Julia also serves as a student researcher at the Transborder Policy Lab and as chair of the annual Graduate Student Border Symposium.

Working on the project “Images and Attributes of Enemies in Pre-Revolutionary Russia” (2016-2021). Some teaching, too.

My academic interests include history of mentalities and ideas, Russian history and borderland issues. My approach tends to be that of a cultural historian; I am especially interested in representations of the past, and the ways they have been used in, for instance, supporting nationalistic efforts.
I am also a freelance writer and photographer. Besides topics related to history and culture, I like to write about – and photograph – nature, environment, countryside and all kind of living creatures.
