The research group examines the reception in Finland of fiction and non-fiction translated from Russian, French, and German, as well as the images these works generate about Russian-, French-, and German-speaking countries. Translated literature and the selection available play a significant role in shaping various perceptions of different countries and cultures. They may also influence the general impression formed of the literature of a given country or language area.
In our project, we will conduct a reader survey aimed at exploring readers’ perceptions of the images constructed through fiction. In addition, the survey will investigate the impressions created by non-fiction dealing with Russian-, French-, and German-speaking countries. The project will also collect interview data with the aim of examining the views and practices of publishers, translators, and booksellers within the field of translated literature.
