OTT Sanna Mustasaari toimii apulaisprofessorina sekä siivilioikeuden tiimissä että Hyvinvointioikeuden keskuksessa oikeustieteiden laitoksella. Hänen tutkimushankkeensa Lapset muilla mailla: Relationaalinen analyysi lastensuojelusta transnationaaleissa konteksteissa (Children Abroad: A Relational Analysis of Finnish Child Protection and Welfare in Transnational Contexts [CARELA], Suomen Akatemia 2020-2024) keskittyy lastensuojelun ylirajaisuuteen erilaisissa tilanteissa. Lisäksi hän johtaa pohjoismaista työryhmäsarjaa NOS-HS exploratory workshop series: Transnational Childhoods, Transnational Rights (ks. https://uefconnect.uef.fi/en/group/nos-hs-workshop-series-transnational-childhoods-transnational-rights-nordic-responses-to-global-challenges-in-the-field-of-child-protection/ ) sekä sosiaalityön VTR rahoituksen saaneen SUOJATIE-konsortiohankkeen osahanketta.

Hänen väitöskirjansa “Rethinking recognition: Transnational families and belonging in law” (2017) käsitteli transnationaalien perhesuhteiden oikeudellisuutta, kansalaisuutta, kuulumista ja tunnustussuhteita erilaisissa normatiivisissa konteksteissa.

Hänen tutkimuksellinen mielenkiintonsa kohdistuu erityisesti oikeuden ja uskonnon välisiin rajapintoihin, perhesuhteiden sääntelyyn, ihmisoikeuksiin, lasten oikeuksiin, transoikeuksiin, kansainväliseen lapsi- ja perheoikeuteen, ulkomaalaisoikeuteen, feministiseen oikeusteoriaan sekä maahanmuuton ja transnationalisuuden tutkimukseen.
