Modern methods in cardiac imaging (MOMESY)
Leaders
Our research group focuses on cardiovascular research using advanced imaging and analytical methods. Our aim is to develop novel approaches for the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, improve the understanding of the mechanisms underlying structural and functional cardiac remodeling, and investigate the impact of sleep disorders on cardiovascular health. Our research combines clinical medicine, cardiac imaging, sleep medicine, medical physics, and signal analytics.
Our group collaborates closely with Kuopio University Hospital, University of Eastern Finland, international research networks, and technology experts. Our multidisciplinary research environment enables the development and clinical implementation of novel imaging techniques.
Methods
We utilize several advanced methodologies in our research, including:
- Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of cardiac structure, function, and tissue alterations
- RAFFn and T1rho imaging for non-contrast assessment of myocardial fibrosis
- Feature tracking strain analysis for the evaluation of myocardial contractility
- 4D Flow MRI for three-dimensional assessment of blood flow in the heart and great vessels
- Diffusion tensor imaging for modeling myocardial tissue orientation
- DENSE imaging for detailed analysis of mechanical dyssynchrony and myocardial wall motion
- Echocardiography and ECG studies for assessment of cardiac structure and electrical activity
- Polysomnography (PSG) and sleep recordings for the evaluation of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders
Research Focus Areas
The main focus areas of our research group include:
- Early detection of myocardial fibrosis and heart failure
- Investigation of electrical and mechanical cardiac dyssynchrony
- Exploring the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and obstructive sleep apnea
- Development of novel cardiac-specific sleep apnea biomarkers
- Clinical implementation of novel MRI-based imaging methods
- Research particularly focused on hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy, as well as non-invasive assessment of pulmonary artery pressure
Our goal is to generate new knowledge on cardiovascular and sleep health and to develop more patient-friendly, accurate, and earlier diagnostic methods for future clinical use.
