I recently completed the Doctoral Programme of Health Sciences – major Nursing from the University of Eastern Finland.  My research interests include family healthcare, nursing in acute care settings, global health nursing, and most recently machine learning in healthcare contexts. I am eager to engage in international interdisciplinary collaborative projects that push the boundaries beyond what is achieved in single local settings. I thrive well in collaborative environments, valuing the exchange of ideas and perspectives that drive innovation in health sciences.

Having defended my Russian “candidate of science” dissertation in 2007, I am currently writing my “European” PhD thesis, which was devoted to cross-border governance on the EU-Russian border, participatory arrangements in cross-border programmes and the role of non-state actors in inter-regional cooperation. However, after Russian invasion of Ukraine there is no more “cross-border cooperation” and “cross-border governance” on the EU-Russian border. So my current research is being revisited towards exploring the “subaltern geopolitics” of the Finnish-Russian border, i.e. the geopolitical imagination of subaltern groups having direct or indirect relations to this border. Also, as a research hobby and a natural scope of interest, I study academic freedoms in Russia (and Russian academia as subaltern).

As a freetime hobby, for many years now, I do journalism. Previously, I reported on sensitive issues of Russian political and social life, such as human rights violations by the state, by the Russian Orthodox Church, by security agencies and courts. Currently, I cover different issues of the Finnish-Russian relations for Russian readers.

Hadi Farahani ([email protected])

Researcher in migration and mental health, working across intergroup relations, youth, disability studies, and child protection. My work examines how structural conditions such as displacement, marginalization, and discrimination shape people’s mental health, and how services can respond in ways that keep people’s own knowledge and agency rather than override them, drawing on a cultural safety approach.

I work mainly with qualitative and mixed methods, including interviews, focus-groups, surveys, arts-based and visual methods, and the social representations approach. Across projects I use a community-based participatory approach in which the participants take part at every stage of research alongside the researchers.

My research focuses on advancing Li/Na-ion battery technology through an in-depth investigation of the synthesis–structure–property relationships and interfacial chemistries of electrode active materials, particularly cathodes, aiming to achieve breakthroughs in energy/power densities, durability, and safety. In pursuit of sustainable solutions, I am also developing upgraded recycling approaches of spent batteries and incorporating biomass-based materials into battery applications to minimize environmental impact. By bridging fundamental research with practical applications, I engage extensively with industry collaborators to address key technical challenges, helping to shape a sustainable, high-performance future for battery technology.

Hamid Behravan ([email protected])

Senior researcher in artificial intelligence (AI) technology in breast cancer personalized medicine
Leading the AI group in Institute of Clinical Medicine, Pathology, and Forensic Medicine, University of Eastern Finland

Dr. Hamid Behravan has earned his master’s degree in 2013 and his doctorate in 2016 both in Computer Science from University of Eastern Finland. From 2017, he has been working as a senior researcher at the same university with topics related to AI and cancer. His multi-disciplinary research has attracted over 500k Euro grants from Cancer Society of Finland in 2018 and 2020, and from the European regional development fund. Alongside his own research, Dr. Behravan supervises PhD students. His research team develops innovative explainable AI-based methods to predict the breast cancer risk and the patient outcome using genetics, clinical, and imaging data.

My research ambition is to understand and enhance human cognition, performance, and development. To achieve that I specialize in methods for multimodal modeling and nonlinear dynamic systems. The domains of interest include human-computer interaction, social interaction, collaborative learning, and surgical expertise. I have been conducting empirical research since 2010 and have a holistic experience with computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) and human-computer interaction (HCI) research. The application domains of my research span (collaborative) problem solving, computer-supported collaborative learning, source-code reading, subtitles reading, and high-precision motor control, i.e., microsurgery or indoor climbing.
