Teele Jänes ([email protected])

In my doctoral research I studied credibility assessment practices of religion-based asylum claims in the Baltic States. Currently, I work in a pilot project exploring different ways of staying in border areas despite the security challenges.

Teemu Koskimäki ([email protected])

My research interests include ecological economics, ecological macroeconomic modelling, global environmental problems, global sustainability, targeted transformational change, leverage points for system change, post-growth, societal addiction to economic growth, societal progress indicators, and sufficiency solutions.

Teemu Makkonen ([email protected])

Teemu’s research interests include regional economic development and innovativeness, particularly in the context of cross-border regions.

Teemu Oivo ([email protected])

Teemu Oivo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Karelian Institute studying digital borders. Additionally, Oivo is part of the Academy of Finland-funded project “Transnational Death: Practices of death and remembrance in the transnational everyday on the Finnish-Russian border” and the Kone Foundation funded-project “Flowision”. In Fall 2023, Oivo is doing a research exchange at the Université Grenoble Alpes as part of the “Transnational Death” -project.

Oivo is specialized in critical discourse analysis and media research, using varieties of platforms, most notably in-depth analysis of online group communications. Oivo’s doctoral dissertation examines how “Russianness” was produced in Finnish-Russian transnational media space in the 2010s. Oivo’s recent research project affiliations include “Strategies of Persuasion: Russian Propaganda in the Algorithmic Age”, and “The Ancient Finnish Kings: a computational study of pseudohistory, medievalism and history politics in contemporary Finland and Russia”.

In my doctoral dissertation, I examine the connections between workplace learning, organizational strategy implementation, and psychological safety from a strategy‑as‑practice perspective. In my research strategy is conceptualized as something people do rather than as a formal plan or outcome, hence, strategy implementation is seen an ongoing learning process embedded in everyday work practices, where interaction among organizational actors is central to the enactment of strategy. Psychological safety is examined as a key enabling condition for participation in these strategic practices and for learning through interaction.

In my PhD research, I develop novel numerical methods for the modeling of the aerosol dynamics, which can be described with the General Dynamic Equation of Aerosols (GDE).  Thus far, the Finite Element Method (FEM) and its extension the Petrov-Galerkin Finite Element Method (PGFEM) has been tested for the single component GDE (Published paper I). Next step is to extend the methodology for the multicomponent GDE (MCGDE). Preliminary results are promising. Furthermore, after the accuracy and efficiency of FEM is established, it will be used in estimation of the aerosol process rates from simulated and measured data.

In addition of my research, I have also lectured the introduction course to the mathematics during two semesters (2020-2021).

Teemu Tuomainen ([email protected])

Visiting Researcher at the Department of Technical Physics investigating applications for magnetic resonance imaging for plant biology and material research.

Teemu-Taneli Sahlström ([email protected])

Research of Teemu Sahlström focuses on medical and biomedical tomographic imaging techniques utilising coupled physics. In his research, he develops numerical methods for modelling and inverse problem of tomographic imaging techniques utilising Bayesian framework for inverse problems, numerical modelling of physics, and deep learning.

Teija Makkonen ([email protected])

I am a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer in social pedagogy at the University of Eastern Finland. My PhD (2024) examined the agency and professional practices of artists in elder care communities. My expertise includes sociocultural work, social pedagogical approaches, cultural well-being, social inclusion, and issues of inequality among vulnerable people in sustainability transition.

I work in the Strategic Research Council-funded SISU project, studying agency, future visions, and perceptions of sufficiency among people in vulnerable positions, such as adults with intellectual disabilities and older people in rural areas. I also contribute to the DRIVEX project funded by the Kone Foundation, which explores older men’s experiences of giving up driving and supporting related life changes.

I am active in the academic community as a board member of the Finnish Society of Social Pedagogy and deputy board member of the Association for Research on Growth and Aging. I am part of the Gender Studies Network (SUVEF) at UEF and will serve as Associate Editor of Sosiaalipedagogiikka from 2026.

I work as a Professor in cultural studies (specialising in research on cultural change) at the School of Humanities, University of Eastern Finland. My recent research has focused on borders and borderlands from the point of view of culture, literature, and material artefacts, and my latest monograph addresses Finnish language literature in Russian Karelia, ”Rajan kirjailijat: Venäjän Karjalan suomenkieliset kirjailijat tilan ja identiteetin kirjoittajina” (Trans. Writers of the Border: Finnish Speaking Writers of Space and Identity in Russian Karelia, SKS, 2018). My recent research projects include “Traumatized Borders: Reviving Subversive Narratives of B/Order, and Other” (Academy of Finland, 2016-20), and “A Lost Mitten and Other Stories: Experiences of Borders, Mobilities, and New Neighbor Relations” (Kone Foundation, 2018-2022).
