I am a cultural anthropologist specializing in the cultural study of music and religion. In my current research I examine different forms of Christian dance in Finland. Previously in my career, I have done research on Rastafari movement and reggae music and Christian hip hop culture, and developed methods to teach intercultural skills at university level. I have done research in Finland, as well as in Namibia and South Africa.

Postdoctoral researcher with interest to enhance the diagnostics of sleep disorders with advanced biosignal analysis techniques.
The topic of my PhD thesis was ”Nocturnal hypoxic load in the evaluation of the progression of sleep apnea”.

My main research focuses on interventional treatment of coronary artery disease, particularly drug-coated balloon (DCB) technology, stent-free PCI strategies, and the treatment of patients at high bleeding risk. I lead and participate in national and international clinical studies evaluating novel coronary intervention strategies with the aim of improving long-term clinical outcomes and safety. I am an environmental historian specialising in the 20th century environmental change. I have studied especially the marine environmental history, the history of human-animal relation, the history of environmentalism and the history of marine science.
I am currently leading the research project (consortium) “Humans and Ticks in the Anthropocene” (HUTI), funded by the Academy of Finland, in which we are investigating the complex relationship between humans and ticks in the Finnish context. I am also involved in the research projects “Cultures of Unsustainability and “Living with the Sea in a Changing Climate”, both funded by the Academy of Finland.

My current research focuses on targeting chemically understudied, i.e. dark, kinases. I combine multiple computational tools, ranging from molecular docking and different machine learning-based methods to molecular dynamics simulations, in my research to design novel chemical probes against my current target kinases. I have additionally worked with molecular modelling and virtual screening of multiple different targets, such as components of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, transcription factors and nuclear receptors. I have obtained my BSc and MSc degrees in Computational Biomedicine from UEF.

Assistant Professor Tuomas Yrttimaa’s research focuses on the use of laser scanning techniques and point cloud processing methods for detailed measurement of trees and forest stands.

Tuomo Alhojärvi ([email protected])

I’m a geographer specialised in postcapitalist theory and practice. I work as Senior Researcher in UEF’s Cultural Studies research group. From March 2026, I’ve led the project After Dystopia: Anticipatory Climate Migration, Spatial Imagination and the Possibility of Mapping Otherwise (2026-2030), funded by Kone Foundation. We study the anticipation of climate mobilities in Finland: how prospective climate-induced migration is anticipated in Finland, and what kind of solidarity-driven, justice-oriented anticipatory practices already exist and may be imagined. Between 2022 and 2026, I worked in the Kone Foundation funded project Post-ownership as an interpretation and experience of economic change.

My current work centres on methods for making urban spaces ‘otherwise’. I build especially upon feminist economic geographies, urban political ecology, critical social and spatial theory, and counter-mapping methods. In ongoing work (August 2026), my research focus is on a critical examination of Finnish anticipations of climate migration. I’m also writing on postdigital geomedia and the cartographies of commons.

I work as part of the Community Economies Research Network and as a member of the Community Economies Institute. I’m also member of the editorial committee of Tiede & edistys, a Finnish journal of critical social studies. I’m an eager collaborator in various social and artistic projects, and will warmly welcome new ideas for collaborations.

Tuula Honkonen ([email protected])

Dr Tuula Honkonen is an expert in international environmental law. Her broad-based expertise ranges from climate law questions and functioning of multilateral environmental agreements to national implementation of international genetic resources regulation and operation of transboundary water agreements. Dr Honkonen’s current research interests lie in climate law and participation in climate policymaking in particular, the dynamics of multilateral environmental agreements, and water diplomacy. Dr. Honkonen has extensive experience in teaching, journal editing, consultancy and reporting work, research project management and the preparation and facilitation negotiation simulation exercises for international environmental law-making courses. In her research, she seeks to combine the legal perspective to practical policy-making, both at the national and international levels.
