I work as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Humanities, University of Eastern Finland. In my postdoctoral project, funded by the Kone Foundation (2023–2026), I study the everyday practices, networks, and expressions of transnational solidarity among Russian-speaking LGBTIQ+ activists in the Baltic states and online, particularly following Russia’s full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine in 2022.
My ethnographic PhD research (2022) examined the development and forms of LGBTIQ+ activism in St. Petersburg during the late 2010s.
I work part-time on a project funded by the Research Council of Finland, titled Menopausing: Diversity, Awareness, and Activism (2024–2028). Drawing on queer and cultural studies, I investigate menopause activist communities and influencers in Finland who seek to advance gender and age equity. More in detail, I focus on communities and influencers engaged with menopause-related themes and promoting gender and age equality, with particular emphasis on the intersectons of activism and care.
I am the principal instructor for the course Gender Studies Perspectives at the University of Eastern Finland.
I supervise doctoral candidates in gender and cultural studies and serve on doctoral follow-up committees.
I am a board member of the Association for Gender Studies in Finland and a vice member at the executive team of the national HILMA Network for Gender Studies.

I have studied ethnomusicology and folklore studies at the universities of Helsinki, Gothenburg, Joensuu and Petroszavodsk. Since 1990s I have studied the minority music and cultures as signifying practices and political and aesthetic activities. I have written about Finnish popular music among the Finns in Sweden and contemporary folk music in Petrozavodsk, Russian Karelia. I have conducted research within the contexts of identities, borders, field work, recent history, cultural policies and activities. Recently my studies have been connected with the Karelian language and music as well as Karelian cultural activism.

My research focusses on the intertwining of literacy, social dimensions of difference and educational inequalities in the context of compulsory education, especially in vocational education and training (VET).
Pirkko Pussinen ([email protected])
In translational dentistry, the goal is to perform multi-disciplinary research to enhance the translation of scientific knowledge to clinical dental practice and to identify research requirements from the clinical practice to be brought to the laboratory. The aim is to encourage and promote collaboration between laboratory and clinical researchers. The objective is to clarify how oral inflammations and dysbiosis contribute to the risk of general chronic health problems. On the other hand, the aim is to spread the word among medical practitioners and the general audience on the systemic risks associated with oral infections.
Prasanthi Medarametla ([email protected])
Prasanthi Medarametla is an Academy Research Fellow at the School of Pharmacy, University of Eastern Finland. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Master’s degree in Pharmacoinformatics from NIPER, India. She then worked as a Project Associate and TATA–CSIR–OSDD Fellow at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad.
Prasanthi was a Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Early Stage Researcher in the EU‑MSCA ITN project INTEGRATE (Interdisciplinary Training Network for Validation of Gram‑Negative Antibacterial Targets). She completed her PhD at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, in 2020, where she focused on computational screening of novel antibacterials within the INTEGRATE project.
In 2022, she joined the University of Cambridge as a Postdoctoral Researcher with support from the Postdoc Pooli (Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation), gaining expertise in experimental microbiology and structural biology techniques, including cryo‑EM and X‑ray crystallography. She later returned to UEF and worked as a Senior Researcher in the Biopharmacy Department before receiving an Academy Research Fellow position in 2025.
Currently, she leads the AVID (Anti‑Virulence Drug Discovery) research group at UEF and serves as the leader of the NORDFORSK NORD‑AViD consortium.

I am a University Teacher in Career Guidance and Counselling. My expertise focuses on guidance pedagogy, dialogical and participatory learning, and the design and development of student-centred teaching.
My teaching emphasises students’ active agency, collaborative learning, interaction, and shared expertise. I create learning environments where students can participate, ask questions, engage in discussion, experiment, and build understanding together. I also see the teacher as a learner: in dialogical pedagogy, knowledge and expertise are constructed collaboratively.
I develop teaching based on research and student feedback. I am particularly interested in how different pedagogical approaches, digital learning environments, and the opportunities offered by technology can support learning, participation, meaningful encounters, and flexible ways of learning. A supportive, dialogical, and inquiry-based approach is at the heart of my teaching and pedagogical development work.
