The Analytical Unit at the School of Pharmacy, University of Eastern Finland, provides advanced analytical expertise and services in mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy for academic and industrial research.

The unit focuses on the development and application of mass spectrometry–based methods for the analysis of metabolites, drugs, proteins, and other biomolecules. Our work supports a wide range of research areas, including medicine, biology, drug development, nutrition, and environmental sciences. We offer both targeted quantitative analyses and untargeted profiling approaches, with a strong emphasis on method development, validation, and data quality in accordance with international guidelines.

Our analytical platforms include LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and chromatographic techniques (HPLC-UV/DAD, HPLC-ECD). High-resolution MS is used particularly for the screening and identification of unknown compounds, as well as for metabolomics and lipidomics studies, enabling comprehensive characterization of biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental samples.

In addition to mass spectrometry, the unit has strong expertise in NMR spectroscopy, which is used for metabolomics, structural analysis, and quantitative determination of small molecules. Our NMR capabilities support applications ranging from metabolic profiling and impurity analysis to drug stability studies and structure elucidation using advanced one- and two-dimensional techniques.

The unit operates state-of-the-art instrumentation, including high-resolution mass spectrometers and Bruker 600 MHz NMR systems equipped with cryoprobes and automated sample handling, enabling efficient analysis of large sample sets.

In addition to research and analytical services, the unit plays a key role in education in analytical chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis. We contribute extensively to teaching at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, and supervise many theses. Our teaching combines theoretical foundations with hands-on training in modern analytical techniques.

Overall, the unit aims to deliver high-quality analytical data and expertise, while supporting both research excellence and the education of future experts in pharmaceutical and analytical sciences.
